Tentoonstelling | Kokou Ferdinand Makouvia
4 nieuwe werken
1. Fefe Kple Dzo (Playing with fire)
Fefe Kple Dzo (Playing with fire) comprises many sculptural installations and two 10-meter long drawings, in black and coloured respectively.
In Fefe Kple Dzo (Playing with fire), Makouvia approaches his chosen materials as an alchemist, mixing and molding charcoal and rubber, using fire to melt and alchemize these natural resources into their final sculpted forms.
2. The Root
Inspired by the quote “We can see a stone grow if we have patience”, Makouvia sculpted around 5000 balls made of clay. As a self-initiated social intervention, he travelled to Kazakhstan in February 2020 where he gave away more than 50 seeds of stone with random passers-by on the street.
3. Edzo kpe Dzo (Fire against Fire)
Kokou Ferdinand Makouvia invited an artist named Lune Diagne (Visual artist, dancer and choregrapher), to work together on the notion of the Body in its materiality and its conversation with the works in the space. In his practice as a dancer, Lune Diagne questions the body in space. The idea of this collaboration is to reactivate the exhibition space by provoking the invisible (almost spiritual) part of the materials present, as if the fire made the tour of the works and came back to inhabit the bodies of the two artists in performance.
4. Haunted Village
‘Haunted Village’ is a land art project that Makouvia started in the context of Kunstfort Buitenateliers in collaboration with De Ateliers. The work features a set of experiments with different materials linking space, land, and water. In the open space surrounding Kunstfort bij Vijfhuizen, Makouvia had the opportunity to extend his material research on which he has been working in his studio at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. This relationship between his studio and working outside is contrasted yet complementary. It relates to connecting the interior with the exterior and to layering his work towards new meanings.
Makouvia started working on this project by using ‘objets trouvés’ on the island and combining them with molded ceramics titled ‘Sculpting the Weight’. These sculptural collages operate as constructive elements that mimic the fort’s architecture. For Makouvia, the island fort thus functions as a blank canvas on which he could pour concepts and ideas generated inside his studio space.
